When the sociological and criminological worlds of academia merged with the practical crime risk and loss control needs of the private sector, CAP Index was formed. Through the study and analysis of demographics, statistics, crime and mapping, the single most accurate predictor of loss, risk and crime vulnerability was introduced.
A Capsule History of CAP Index, Inc.
The CRIMECAST® system was originally developed in response to legislation proposing stringent security measures for all locations operated by a broad range of businesses.
Criminology Professor Dr. Robert M. Figlio suggested that this draft legislation, while well-intended, was unlikely to achieve any material increase in safety at high crime risk locations. Figlio then joined with Researcher-Statistician Steven K. Aurand to lead a team of academics, business people, computer professionals, and legislators in developing a rational, cost-effective means of determining the likelihood of crime to occur at specific locations which would permit more effective allocation of security measures. The original research was sponsored by large oil and convenience store companies, health care providers, and manufacturing concerns.
Based on the success of this initial project, Figlio and Aurand formed CAP Index, Inc. in 1988 to make crime vulnerability assessments commercially available. CRIMECAST assessments are now used by companies for decision-making about security programs, property selection, and effective resource allocation. CAP Index is the preeminent source of crime data and mapping information for businesses in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada.
